IKEA Builds Buzz With Blue Bag

With little money to spare, college kids tend to be on the cutting
edge when it comes to cool and affordable products. Swedish retail
chain IKEA’s Philadelphia-area stores recently banked on students’
savvy to promote its home décor products.
Along with more than 40 other sponsors, IKEA set up a tent on
Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway September 24 for the
“Campus Philly Kick-Off.” Presented by non-profit group Campus
Philly and the city of Philadelphia, the event was targeted at
welcoming college students to the area to kick off the new academic
year. The region, incidentally, is home to more than 80 institutions
of higher learning and 300,000 students.
Inside the IKEA booth, students received catalogs and a chance to
win various products, as well as a $1,000 sweepstakes for a total
IKEA dorm room if they registered with Campus Philly. The students
received text messages throughout the day, notifying them if they
had won a prize.
But in addition to the prizes, 2,000 students were given blue tote
bags imprinted with the IKEA logo on the carrying strap. Students
clamored for them because they were useful for holding items
collected at the other booths, while IKEA received great brand
visibility, says Jennifer Braxton, a PR spokesperson for IKEA.
“By the end of the day, there was a sea of blue bags up and down the
Parkway,” Braxton says. She estimates that the bags generated
roughly 4 million impressions. And the bags continued to show up
long after the event, since they could be used to hold laundry,
books and other college-life necessities.
The key message the bags generated? IKEA is never too far out of
reach. “The overall goal was really to encourage students and let
them know we have an urban location,” says Braxton. “The marketing
opportunity was phenomenal.” – SB

Increase Sales By Following Up
Landing new clients can be very expensive and in a
slow economy you may feel like you are chasing your tail with no
results. If you spend just a little more time following up with your
existing clients you will generate sales that might note has existed
otherwise.
You can’t simply contact your current clients and ask for more
business. You must focus on caring and clever follow up techniques
that will benefit your client rather than aggravate them. Here are
four simple but effect follow up ideas that take very little effort
to execute.
1. Upon receipt of an order you need to immediately mail out a
“Thank You” note.
2. Find newspaper, magazine or online news articles about your
client’s type of business – mail them (do not email them) with a
note telling them you thought they might be interested in the
enclosed article.
3. Generate a weekly or monthly newsletter featuring informative
facts about your product line. You should also feature testimonials
from satisfied customers that are using your product or service.
4. Call your client a few weeks after you have delivered your
product or provided your service, just to ask if they were
completely satisfied with their purchase.
Do these simple follow up techniques for 6 to 8 months and you will
see a repeat sales increase from current customers that could not be
easier to generate.
